I'm looking at taking a trip to Scotland next June and wondered if anyone had advice about renting a car. A quick search on the Avis site shows this would be about 200 pounds for 8 days (for a Fiat 500 class car), which seems not unreasonable, especially given unlimited mileage. We're looking at a loop starting in Glasgow, going up to Tain, and coming back down through Aberdeen and Edinburgh, that will be around 600 miles.

I guess my (starting) questions are what's a reasonable cost, do I need any special license, what should I pessimistically expect to spend on gas?

Carrera 4S that you can rent from Avis (if you have deep wallets and are >30) for your time.

In my car it'd cost around £70 ish to do 600 miles. If you're getting a petrol 500 expect to pay slightly more than that.

Some things to consider:

1) Is that price inclusive of tax and all fees? Make sure you have a good handle on that. That said, that price seems reasonable with what I have seen.

2) Get a diesel if you can. Why? It's Jalop as all get out...and it will save you a bunch on fuel.

3) Your car will likely be a stick. Be ready for that.

4) Figure out how you will be covered for insurance. Are you going to buy from the rental place, does your credit card provide coverage or does your own car insurance cover anything for driving in Europe? You may want to looking third party trip insurance that covers rentals.
